What is german chamomile essential oil?

German chamomile essential oil is steam distilled from the chamomile plant’s flower heads. It is also known as blue chamomile essential oil because of its dark blue colour. German chamomile has a strong sweet, herbal and floral aroma.

It is often confused with roman chamomile as they are both from the Asteraceae family. Roman chamomile has a sweet, apple like aroma. Whereas, german chamomile has a more herbal and floral scent.

Blending suggestions

German chamomile oil has a floral aroma with a slightly fruity and bitter undertone. It is used as a middle note in blends.

Most other floral, citrusy and herbal essential oils blend well with german chamomile oil. It can be blended with oils like clary sage, lemon, lavender, tea tree, bergamot and cedarwood.

4 drops lavender oil

3 drops orange oil

2 drops chamomile oil

 

Floral and slightly woodsy blend:

8 drops chamomile oil

6 drops frankincense oil

4 drops cypress oil

2 drops bergamot oil

2 drops chamomile oil

1 drop sandalwood amyris oil

How to store german chamomile essential oil

Chamomile essential oil needs to be kept in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight. This will stop it from degrading overtime and help prolong the quality. Ensure to keep all essential oils out of the reach of children.

Safety precautions

German chamomile essential oil should not be applied to the skin directly as this could cause irritated skin. Make sure to dilute the chamomile essential oil in a carrier oil before applying topically.

We recommend doing a patch test with the diluted oil on a small area of skin to make sure there is no irritation or sensitivity.
